Mark 12:38-40 (NIV)
Warning Against the Teachers of the Law
38 As he taught, Jesus said, “Watch out for the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, 39 and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets. 40 They devour widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will be punished most severely.”
We might like to take this text and say we have lots of leaders who could be identified with the arrogance that is described here – political leaders, church leaders, community leaders, teachers, professors…but let us not point our finger at them and not be mindful that we might be condemning ourselves by looking in the mirror. When people commend us for what we are doing whether it is right or wrong we need stop a moment and consider if it should be commended? Let us not get caught up in seeking self-praise. Let us be working to bring Jesus praised.
Lord it is always our privilege to serve you but keep us mindful that this is what we are called to do. Let us not be complacent or arrogant but always seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit in knowing your leading through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
