Mark 12:41-44 (NIV)
The Widow’s Offering
41 Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. 42 But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents. 43 Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. 44 They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.”
Where better to talk about giving than at a money table. The disciples were noting what people were giving and noting that there were some great offerings being given. Jesus was always getting them to think outside the box (forgive the pun) and this case it was asking them to think outside the money box to what it cost those who gave their contribution. The rich had riches to give but the woman only had two small coins, but she gave her all. Jesus was speaking to those that day and he still speaks to us today that he expects us to do what he and the woman did, give it all.
Lord, we do get tired at times doing your will in our lives but never the kind of weariness your son endured. When we are tired, may we find rest in prayer and in the company of others. Make us resolute as was that woman and our Lord to give our all. Amen.
